Small, cool space of the week

Sunday Envy...

Every now and then I would get envious of the kids that have it all. Growing up with two younger sisters,  I  never had the opportunity to have my own room. I am not complaining that sharing a room with my two awesome sisters was a bad thing since it was great to have them around to keep me company at night (we had so much fun gossiping the night away) but our bedroom was unfortunately only a cramped ten by ten box with little space for unique characteristics. We attempted to personalize our space by adding a curtain here and there but nothing dramatic. We also had the chance to pick the style and color of our  bunk bed and the dresser but it was nothing in comparison to the bedrooms that I am about to show you! It is Sunday so I thought I would share with you some of my favorite kids room. Go parents!

I hope that's enough eye candy for this week (though you can never get enough). Well, here comes Monday guys! have a blast!

While I was still in school, I had a couple of wild ideas that I really loved and wanted to explore but unfortunately, they were discouraged by my professors. I should have known that every now and then, my instinct and gut feeling was right. I knew that someday, someone will share my same idea, and I can finally say "I told you so" to the teachers that told me no!  Well here it is: Dinning table against the wall.

Well if it works, why not?

Dinning and Office ...

Look at what I got for you today. I'm excited to present to you my workstation/dinning table. When you have a small space, you can always make a space multi-functional to save room.  Remember the rectangular table with the two chairs you saw on the top right corner below?

Remember this?

Do you see the living room space on the plan? Well, I can finally show you the living space because our sofa just arrived today! Although there are still some unfinished touches, it's a great way to continuously show you guys more updates in the future! Here is our living room set.

Something blue...

I have been looking for something borrowed and something blue for my wedding and stumbled upon these beautiful blue trays that would be perfect for my place. Tragically, I must resist them since the budget for the wedding alone is already tight so I can only admire them from afar for now. What are some items that are on your wish list that you would like to own someday?

Minnie's turn

After seeing what I did for Karen, my youngest sister Minnie decided to have her share as well. Of course being the youngest, she usually gets what she wants. So here is the graphic piece that I'm giving her to display in her dorm/apartment room when she is back in school again. I hope she likes it and thinks of me more often.

Her favorite color is green so I'm pretty sure it will fit right in her space!

Our bedroom inspiration!

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="432" caption="Asian influenced bedroom inspiration"][/caption]

My wonderful fiancĂ© always has a say in our space. You would think that because I am a designer, I'm the one with  full control over  the house but in the end it's really 'our' space so his opinions do matter. Though I usually have the last word,  he is one tough client to please since we have different design perspectives. I have decided that the bedroom and living room will be based on what he likes, but the kitchen is all mine and he'll just have no say in it! (okay maybe just a little.) ^-^

After a lot of patience and compromising, we finally agreed that the above space is ideal for the both of us. So our bedroom will have a calm, relaxing, cozy feel to it with an Asian influenced furniture set  and of course lots of natural materials. I cannot wait to make this happen. Stay tune!

Furniture Board..

This post will be about the furniture suggestions that I have researched for Karen's space. It includes all of the items that are  recommend for the space based upon the floor plan that she has approved of. To save her some time, I actually might do the shopping for her <3. She can also use these recommendations to do her own shopping as well. I hope you like them Karen!

Studio layout

My sister just told me she found her studio, so right away I got to work laying out her space. She needs a sleeping area that fits a queen size bed, a desk for school works, a breakfast bar table double as a food prep area. She has plenty of storage space and a spacious bathroom so she doesn't need much else. It was fun working on her space since I love a good challenge. The challenge is to maximize a small space that will includes all of the required areas and at the same give a room really good circulation. This is what I come up with.

She likes it... what do you think?

Summer Loving...

What a beautiful day in the neighborhood! My day started early so I got to enjoy every minute of this gorgeous day in Chicago. After lugging three bags full of clothing that the FI and I have sorted through during our summer cleaning to our local church, I was totally grateful to have an empty cart. You see, I was walking for at least a mile with my cart and was all sweaty and yucky but the Chicago breeze was such a blessing because it cooled me down instantly. With my empty cart, I casually strolled back to my apartment while at the same time enjoying the blooming flowers all around our neighborhood. The flowers were lovely and full of vibrant colors. I cannot wait to finally move into the new space because the first thing that I will do is get some beautiful flowers for the house! I'll just have to share. Aren't you jealous that my neighborhood is better than yours? lol I am kidding! Please take a look =)

Good Morning Sister!

My younger sister is moving into her studio soon ---in fact it might be August 1st. I have been thinking of what to get her for her new space that will brighten up her day. So I thought why not create something that will remind her of what an awesome person she is just by being herself. Something to hang near her coffee table or desk that will remind her of me also. It's a 'Win Win' Situation (inside joke)  ^-^. So I am working on a vector design that will be printed on a bigger scale paper that she can frame. I do like this first draft, lets see if she likes it!

Moving in!

So it is official! We are moving in the first of August. Above is a rough furniture layout I have created for our new space. I think it works well. Soon enough you will see a break down 'material board' for each room. I can hardly contain my excitement. I am ready to make some serious furniture investments. Lets break down the similarity and differences between our two spaces.

How To

  • Draw out the room's floor plan best as you can. Do include the locations of all windows, doors, and closets. Make note of columns, door swing direction or any other details in the room.
  • Use a tape measure to measure each wall, corner to corner. Make sure to mark the sizes and locations of all openings and built-ins (doorways, pass-throughs, built-in bookcases, etc).
  • Note the measurements on your drawing.
A few more details that will be helpful:
  • Ceiling height / Note any change in ceiling height
  • Power outlet locations
  • Windows and door height
  • Location of windows on each wall
  • Location of any wall (sconce) or ceiling lights

  • Take a handful of digital photos of the room from each corner. Be sure to include photos of the locations of windows and doors/doorways.
  • Try to get the best direct shot of each wall.
  • Include photos of any existing furniture, accessories or artwork that you'd like us to include in the design.
  • Include the measurements of each existing piece (height-x-width-x- height)

  • Gather “tear sheets” from magazines or online images, tell us know what you love and what you don’t love in them.
  • Show us images of colors you love and those that you don't.

Sneak Peak...

I'm excited to say that I have another project on the way. Above are the plans of the new house that I will be working on. It is being built as I speak. The owners are no other than my lovely future sister-in-law and her husband. my future sister-in-law sent me the plans and asked if I can help them with  the house's design. I am thrill to have such a big space all at my dispense. I have to mention that they live in New York, the house is in Philadelphia and I live in Chicago. I wish to see the construction process so hopefully I get a chance to fly over sometime this year. In future posts there will be total of 2 projects that I will be working on. Oh boy, it will be a busy summer!

Moving out!

For two years while still in school, I have been okay with living in a tiny one bedroom apartment.  Part of the reason is because Lincoln Park is such a wonderful neighborhood. The night life here is unbeatable. There are so many restaurants, parks, and the beaches (actually it is huge Lake but can't complain there.) Now that school is over and we are getting marry we need an upgrade that won't cost us more than we already have paid. For the last month both of us have been actively looking for a place that we can see ourselves living for the next 3 years or so- a space that we can have guests over without shame- a space that we can call home. We are happy to say we are on the right track and is getting closer to our dream place. But for now let me explain the picture above.
